The structure and function of the human body are presented in a regional format. Students develop an understanding of anatomical elements through the study of models, atlas drawings, and photographs. They also work in small groups to dissect human cadavers. The major emphasis is on the structures of the upper and lower extremities. Companion course to PHTH 501SL.

PHTH 502S. ANATOMY 2. 1 Credit.

The structure and function of the human body presented in a regional and systemic approach. Students develop an understanding of anatomical elements through the study of bones, models, atlas drawings, and photographs. Students also work in small groups to dissect human cadavers. The major emphasis of this course is on the structures of the head and neck, spine, thorax, abdomen, and pelvis. Companion course to PHTH 502SL.

PHTH 511S. CLINICAL KINESIOLOGY. 2 Credits.

Pre-requisites: all courses in physical therapy are restricted to students accepted into the program. Corequisite: PHTH 511SL.
Focuses on human kinesiology and pathokinesiology. Emphasis is on functional anatomy to acquire understanding of physical therapy examination, evaluation, and therapeutic interventions. Topics include osteokinematics and arthrokinematics. Companion course to PHTH 511SL.

PHTH 521S. NEUROSCIENCE. 2 Credits.

Pre-requisites: all courses in physical therapy are restricted to students accepted into the program. Corequisite: PHTH 521SL.
The structure and function of the central nervous system are presented in this foundational course in physical therapy. Topics include neuronal excitation, somatosensation, cerebral blood supply, cranial nerves, spinal reflexes, motor control, and sleep regulation. Students identify components of the human brain and spinal cord in a cadaver laboratory. Companion course to PHTH 521SL.

PHTH 522S. NEURO MANAGEMENT 1. 2 Credits.

Pre-requisites: all courses in physical therapy are restricted to students accepted into the program. Corequisite: PHTH 522SL.
Provides opportunities to apply principles of neuroscience to examination and rehabilitation approaches in healthy and disordered systems. Students apply selected physical therapy intervention strategies directed at the modulation of the sensory and motor systems. Clinical signs and symptoms of CNS pathology are presented and related to patients with movement disorders. Companion course to PHTH 522SL.

PHTH 531S. APPLIED EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY. 4 Credits.

Pre-requisites: all courses in physical therapy are restricted to students accepted into the program. Corequisite: PHTH 531SL.
Examines body systems under resting conditions, in response to acute exercise challenge, and with adaptation to chronic exercise. The effects of decreased use and pathology on body function and subsequent activity limitation and participation restrictions are emphasized. This course explains the role of physical therapy use of exercise assessment and prescription to improve patient outcomes. Applied clinical reasoning is fostered through use of full patient cases. Provides an introduction to physical therapy examination, covering patient interview and history, systems review, vital sign assessment, resistive testing, range of motion and mobility, and overview of upper and lower quarter screens. Companion course to PHTH 541SL.

PHTH 542S. INTRO TO PT PROCEDURES. 2 Credits.

Introduces clinical procedures commonly used by physical therapists. Content includes mobility and gait training, assistive device use, thermal agents and modalities, and patient and provider safety. Companion course to PHTH 542SL.

PHTH 551S. SCREENING FOR DISEASE. 3 Credits.

Pre-requisites: all courses in physical therapy are restricted to students accepted into the program.
Introduces students to screening for referral in physical therapy practice. Students learn how to review the major body systems and screen for diseases that mimic neuromusculoskeletal conditions and warrant referral to a primary care provider. Fundamentals of musculoskeletal imaging is introduced relative to the screening process.

PHTH 552S. PHARMACOLOGY FOR PHYSICAL THERAPISTS. 3 Credits.

Pre-requisites: all courses in physical therapy are restricted to students accepted into the program.
Fundamentals in pharmacology help the physical therapist incorporate the effects of drugs into the design and implementation of patient care.

PHTH 562S. RESEARCH METHODS. 3 Credits.

Pre-requisites: all courses in physical therapy are restricted to students accepted into the program.
Covers research design, subjects, variables and measurement, and descriptive and inferential statistics. Emphasizes interpretation, application and appraisal of clinical research evidence.

PHTH 571S. PT PRACTICE SEMINAR 1. 2 Credits.

Pre-requisites: all courses in physical therapy are restricted to students accepted into the program.
Explores foundations of the physical therapy (PT) profession and evidence-based practice. Introduces the role of the PT and characteristics of services across practice settings. Emphasis is on developing clinical research questions, conducting a literature review, accessing literature, and applying research to clinical problems.

PHTH 572S. PT PRACTICE SEMINAR 2. 3 Credits.

Pre-requisites: all courses in physical therapy are restricted to students accepted into the program.
Covers professionalism in physical therapy including the role of self-reflection, goal setting, giving and receiving feedback, and performance assessment in professional development. Explores ethical issues and cultural competence, including justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI). Introduces foundations of clinical documentation skills. Includes preparation for clinical education experiences through First Aid, CPR, HIPAA, and blood borne pathogen training.

Provides an in-depth study of patient examination, evaluation, pathophysiology, and intervention of the musculoskeletal system. Covers fundamental orthopedic principles, scanning examinations, diagnosis and intervention related to the cervical and thoracic spine and upper extremity. Special topics include the temporomandibular region, concussion, headaches, and arthritis. Emphasis is on differential diagnosis, clinical decision making, and intervention planning. Provides an in-depth study of patient examination, evaluation, pathophysiology, and intervention of the musculoskeletal system. Concepts integrated throughout include conditions related to the lower quarter and axial skeleton, as well as clinical reasoning related to comprehensive patient care. PHTH 623S. NEURO MANAGEMENT 2. 4 Credits.

Covers examination, evaluation and intervention of the neuromuscular system and associated diagnoses. Focuses on PT for patients with spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, vestibular disorders, degenerative and other neurological diseases. Emphasis is on management of the patient across the continuum of care. Content includes patient handling, intervention from low to high functioning patients, gait training, use of orthoses and specialty equipment. Companion course to PHTH 623SL.

Addresses the management of cardiovascular and/or pulmonary impairments in patients with disability. Emphasis is placed on examination, evaluation, and treatment of patients across rehabilitation settings. Addresses the physical therapy management of medically complicated patients. Emphasis is placed on examination, evaluation, and interventions of patients in inpatient settings. Students learn how to develop a plan of care that promotes movement, restores function, and prevents disability from trauma, critical illness, and surgery. Companion course to PHTH 654SL.

Management of the pediatric client with a diverse variety of movement challenges. Topics include theories of typical and atypical development, standardized assessments, common treatment techniques, equipment, orthotics, and adaptive technology for pediatric clients. Companion course to PHTH 655SL.

Provides knowledge and skills to examine, evaluate, and develop a comprehensive plan of care for patients with integumentary system disorders, amputations, and pelvic health conditions. Introduces strategies to manage patients with psychiatric disorders.

Explores the written comprehensive exam, expectations during the final year of the program, and the process of taking the national licensing exam and applying for licensure to practice physical therapy.

PHTH 676S. PT ADMINISTRATION. 3 Credits.

Explores physical therapists’ professional responsibilities in multiple settings, including delegation of services. Topics include management theory and principles, organizational structure, billing, healthcare policy and laws, marketing, and leadership skills. Opportunities for future professional development and strategies to avoid burnout are examined.

Ten-week full-time clinical education experience during which the student participates in the delivery of physical therapy services under the direct supervision of one or more licensed physical therapists serving in the role of Clinical Instructor (CI). In addition to patient examination, treatment, and documentation of care, the student participates in the breadth of professional responsibilities of the physical therapist (program development, marketing, interdisciplinary meetings, etc.)
