Music Composition Major, Bachelor of Music (BM)
This program is designed to prepare students for composing and presenting compositions in a variety of genres including film scoring, orchestral, choral, wind, chamber, mixed media works, commercial music, and theater/dance work. This course of study presupposes that the student will have a strong background in musical performance on one or more instruments or voice. Entry into this degree program is by departmental interview, performance audition, and with the consent of the head of composition studies.
Grade Requirement for all majors offered by the Music Department: the minimum acceptable grade for any music course required for graduation (including transferred music courses) is ≥C.

Students who earn a Bachelor of Music in Music Composition from EWU should be able to:
- perform music in public on the primary instrument in a manner consistent with professional expectations through successful completion of juries, recitals, and ensemble concerts;
- demonstrate advanced competency in music theory through score analysis and compositional exercises;
- demonstrate advanced music aural skills through dictation and sight singing exercises;
- demonstrate advanced historical knowledge of music through writing research reports and exams;
- demonstrate fundamental music keyboard skills through successful completion of a piano proficiency exam;
- demonstrate basic skills in music conducting through successful completion of practical conducting assignments;
- demonstrate advanced skills in music composition through the creation of original scores and performances, each facilitated by appropriate professional music software and historical/contemporary compositional techniques;
- demonstrate advanced skills in music arranging/orchestration through successful completion of assignments using appropriate professional software programs and principles of interpretation.
