Career and Technical Education, Master of Education (M.ED)

The Master of Education in Career & Technical Education program provides the opportunity to attain an Initial CTE Certification Route 2: Business and Industry along with a master’s degree. Candidates who complete this program are eligible for jobs at skill centers and secondary education teachers (grades 7-12) in their specialized CTE area in this high need area identified by the State of Washington. 
 
  • This program leads to an initial CTE teaching certification.

Through this program students will qualify for a Washington State Initial Career and Technical Education certificate to teach in grades 7–12, ONLY within their certificate V-code (Route 2: Business and Industry). Visit the OSPI website for further details. 

Admission Requirements
  1. 6,000 hours of verifiable occupational experience over the past ten years or 2,000 hours of verifiable occupational experience PLUS 4,000 hours teaching.
  2. Must take the WEST-B or SAT/ACT with reading, writing and math.
  3. *Those without an initial teaching certificate must show proof of completion of Washington State History or PNW History course. History requirement must be completed before CTE Certification can be made.
  4. Have earned a baccalaureate degree (either a BA or BS) from an accredited institution of higher education.
  5. Have earned a grade point average ≥3.0 on a 4-point scale during the final 90 quarter credits (or 60 semester credits) of enrolled coursework.

Students who earn an M.Ed. in Career and Technical Education from EWU should be able to:
  • Demonstrate advanced understanding of the CTE environment and its role in education - Graduates will understand the structure, purpose, and function of CTE within P–12 and postsecondary systems, including its role in workforce preparation and student career pathways;
  • Apply effective instructional planning strategies for CTE industry areas - Graduates will design standards‑aligned lessons, units, and assessments tailored to diverse occupational fields and learner needs across CTE program areas;
  • Utilize effective classroom and laboratory management strategies - Graduates will implement management practices appropriate to both academic and technical learning environments, ensuring safety, engagement, and productive learning conditions;
  • Employ differentiated, work‑based, and experiential learning strategies - Graduates will design and deliver instruction using work‑based learning, contextualized teaching, and differentiated approaches that meet the needs of diverse learners and occupational settings;
  • Demonstrate mastery of CTE curriculum development and instructional design principles - Graduates will design, evaluate, and revise CTE curricula using research‑based instructional design methods, aligning content with industry standards and emerging workforce needs;
  • Use assessment and evaluation strategies appropriate for technical and vocational learning - Graduates will apply a variety of assessment tools and evaluation methods to measure student performance in both academic and technical competencies;
  • Apply leadership, communication, and problem‑solving skills within CTE settings - Graduates will demonstrate leadership capacity through effective communication, decision‑making, and problem‑solving across CTE programs and educational contexts;
  • Demonstrate cultural responsiveness and support for equitable CTE access - Graduates will employ inclusive instructional and leadership practices that promote equitable access to CTE pathways for diverse student populations;
  • Integrate research and evidence‑based practice to improve CTE instruction and programs - Graduates will analyze current research in CTE and apply findings to improve teaching, curriculum, and program effectiveness;
  • Demonstrate professional readiness through field‑based experience and portfolio development  - Graduates will successfully complete an internship or applied practicum in a CTE setting and produce a professional portfolio demonstrating competency in CTE teaching and leadership.
