Library Media Certificate, Graduate

The Library Media Graduate Certificate is designed for current teachers to meet the Library Media Competencies for the State of Washington Educator Standards Board. 
 
  • This program does not lead to initial teaching certification. 
  • Must hold valid teaching certificate for admission into program. 
  • This program meets the requirements for an add-on endorsement in the State of Washington.

This program is not American Library Association (ALA) certified. 

Through this program, certified Washington educators will be eligible to earn a P-12 Library Media endorsement upon successful completion of the WEST-E in Library Media (test 042) to add to their teaching certificate.

Admissions Requirements
  1. Have earned a baccalaureate degree (either a BA or BS) from an accredited institution of higher education.
  2. Have earned a GPA ≥3.0 on a 4–point scale during the final 90 quarter credits (or 60 semester credits) of enrolled coursework.
  3. Submit a copy of an educator certificate.

Students who earn a Graduate Certificate in Library Media from EWU should be able to:
  • Provide leadership that improves student learning and advances the school library program - Graduates will demonstrate leadership within the educational community to enhance teaching, learning, and schoolwide literacy initiatives;
  • Design, implement, and evaluate an effective school library media program - Graduates will develop, administer, and assess library media programs by managing personnel, information systems, resources, and facilities to meet school goals;
  • Select, evaluate, organize, and maintain high‑quality library collections - Graduates will apply professional principles to evaluate, select, and maintain diverse, developmentally appropriate resources that support curriculum goals and student needs;
  • Teach and support information literacy and inquiry‑based learning - Graduates will use a wide range of resources to teach students how to define, retrieve, analyze, interpret, organize, evaluate, synthesize, and present information and ideas independently;
  • Demonstrate effective instructional skills in literacy, collaboration, and curriculum integration - Graduates will demonstrate effective teaching skills in literacy development, collaborate with classroom teachers, and integrate information literacy into curricular content;
  • Manage library media collections, resources, and technologies responsibly and efficiently - Graduates will demonstrate competency in media collection management, digital resource curation, and technology‑embedded instruction to support K–12 learners and educators;
  • Foster equitable access to information and promote ethical, responsible information use - Graduates will support student and faculty access to information while promoting ethical, legal, and responsible use of digital and print resources;
  • Integrate emerging technologies to enhance learning, library services, and digital literacy - Graduates will meaningfully integrate new media, digital tools, and information technologies to support teaching, learning, and library program innovation;
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and community partners to support instructional goals - Graduates will serve as instructional partners—working collaboratively with educators to design resource‑rich learning experiences aligned with curriculum goals;
  • Demonstrate readiness for professional certification through supervised field experiences - Graduates will apply library media competencies in authentic K–12 settings through supervised internships, demonstrating readiness for endorsement as Library Media Specialists.
