Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, Master of Education (M.ED)
The Master of Education in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) program is designed to provide advanced opportunities for those seeking to work with emergent bilinguals, dual language learners, and multi-lingual persons through the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) in a variety of settings.
These settings include but are not limited to programs that provide services for teaching English like adult basic skills programs, those in refugee settings, programs in other countries. Ideal for those who wish to work in other countries teaching English or working remotely teaching students in other countries.

- This program does not lead to a K-12 ELL Endorsement.
- Candidates may or may not be certified teachers for admission into program.

Admissions Requirements
- Have earned a baccalaureate degree (either a BA or BS) from an accredited institution of higher education.
- Have earned a GPA ≥3.0 on a 4–point-scale during the final 90 quarter credits (or 60 semester credits) of enrolled coursework.

Students who earn an M.Ed. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from EWU should be able to:
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge of TESOL research, theory, and pedagogical practices - Graduates will understand and apply major theories of second language acquisition, linguistic development, and TESOL pedagogy in diverse educational contexts;
- Design and implement culturally and linguistically responsive instruction - Graduates will plan and deliver instruction that is culturally sustaining, linguistically appropriate, and responsive to the needs of multilingual learners across grade levels and program models;
- Teach English language and literacy skills using evidence‑based methods - Graduates will employ instructional strategies to develop multilingual learners’ oral language, reading, writing, and academic language across content areas;
- Use and interpret assessments to support English language development - Graduates will select, design, and interpret formative and summative assessments to monitor language proficiency, guide instruction, and evaluate learner progress;
- Apply linguistics and applied language studies to real‑world teaching situations - Graduates will integrate applied linguistics—including phonology, morphology, syntax, pragmatics, and sociolinguistics—into instructional decision‑making and curriculum planning;
- Foster inclusive learning environments that support multilingual learners’ social, cultural, and academic development - Graduates will cultivate environments that value diverse linguistic identities, promote cultural competence, and support the well‑being of English learners;
- Evaluate, adapt, and develop TESOL curriculum and instructional materials - Graduates will critically examine TESOL curriculum and materials and design units and lessons that reflect current research, best practices, and learner needs;
- Demonstrate ethical, equitable, and bias‑aware TESOL practices - Graduates will apply ethical and unbiased principles in language instruction, assessment, and learner support;
- Analyze, synthesize, and apply TESOL research to enhance instructional practice - Graduates will engage with peer‑reviewed research, apply findings to improve teaching, and demonstrate proficiency in research methods relevant to TESOL;
- Communicate and collaborate effectively with families, colleagues, and educational communities - Graduates will work collaboratively with educators, families, and community partners to support English learners’ academic and linguistic success;
- Demonstrate readiness for professional practice through supervised practicum or internship experiences - Graduates will apply TESOL methods and assessment strategies in authentic instructional settings under supervision, demonstrating mastery of TESOL competencies.
