The graduate certificate in Human Systems Biology is a three-course program in which students will study a subset of the organ systems in the human body through specialized coursework that focuses on those organ systems. As these are elective courses that will vary by institution depending upon the expertise of the faculty, it is likely that the students have not had the opportunity to take these courses. The students will complete three courses in the Department of Biology, likely as one course per quarter, all of which are offered at EWU’s Cheney campus.

It is appropriate for those who plan to apply to professional (graduate) clinical programs, including medical, dental, optometry, physical therapy, pharmacy, and physician assistant. It also is appropriate for those seeking entry into medical laboratory science programs. Finally, it is appropriate for those who wish to pursue teaching opportunities in this Biology, such as instructor positions at community colleges. Students who enroll in the graduate certificate will be required to have completed a B.S. degree in Biology or a related discipline, with a cumulative grade point average ≥ 3.0, with completed coursework in general chemistry and genetics.

Note: A student enrolled in both the Human Systems Biology certificate and the Human Disease and Defense certificate cannot apply BIOL 530, to both certificates.

If necessary, students may substitute for one of these systems biology courses either BIOL 536, or BIOL 538. We offer this optional replacement for one course to account for the possibility that not all courses will be offered in a given year (e.g., if faculty are on professional leave).
