Health and Physical Education Certificate, Graduate
The Health & Physical Education Graduate Certificate program is designed for graduate candidates to gain advanced knowledge of health and physical education. The Health and Physical Education program can prepare students to work in a variety of settings.
- This program does not lead to initial teaching certification.
- Must hold valid teaching certificate for admission into program.
- This program meets the requirements for an add-on endorsement in the State of Washington.

Through this program, certified Washington educators will be eligible to earn a P-12 Health & Fitness endorsement upon successful completion of the WEST-E Health/Fitness (test 029) to add to their teaching certificate.
Admissions Requirements
- Have earned a baccalaureate degree (either a BA or BS) from an accredited institution of higher education.
- Have earned a GPA ≥3.0 on a 4–point scale during the final 90 quarter credits (or 60 semester credits) of enrolled coursework.
- Submit a copy of an educator certificate.

Students who earn a Health & Physical Education Graduate Certificate from EWU should be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and application of scientific and theoretical concepts central to health and physical education - Graduates will demonstrate advanced discipline‑specific scientific and theoretical knowledge essential to cultivating physically educated individuals;
- Demonstrate competent movement performance and health‑enhancing fitness aligned with state and national standards - Graduates will show mastery of movement skills, physical fitness concepts, and performance competencies as defined by Washington State and National K–12 Health & PE Standards;
- Plan and implement developmentally appropriate learning experiences for diverse learners - Graduates will design and deliver developmentally appropriate, inclusive health and physical education lessons aligned with local, state, and national standards to meet diverse student needs;
- Apply effective pedagogical, communication, and motivational strategies to enhance student engagement - Graduates will employ strong communication skills and research‑supported pedagogical strategies to foster engagement, skill acquisition, and positive learning environments in health and physical education settings;
- Advocate for health, physical activity, and lifelong wellness within school and community contexts - Graduates will demonstrate leadership in advocacy, program development, and health promotion to support lifelong wellness for students and communities;
- Demonstrate skill in curricular design, assessment, and program evaluation in health and physical education - Graduates will design standards‑based curricula, create valid assessments, and evaluate program effectiveness using current research and best practices;
- Create safe, supportive, and inclusive physical activity and health education environments - Graduates will design learning environments that promote safety, accessibility, positive social interaction, and engagement for learners with varying physical abilities;
- Integrate technology and contemporary instructional innovations into health and physical education practice - Graduates will apply technological tools and instructional innovations to enhance learning, assessment, and engagement in health and physical education settings;
- Use educational research to inform decision‑making and continuous improvement - Graduates will interpret, conduct, and apply educational research to improve teaching effectiveness and program quality in health and physical education;
- Demonstrate readiness for endorsement and professional practice through applied internships and portfolio assessment - Graduates will apply advanced competencies in supervised health and physical education internships and demonstrate mastery through portfolio and comprehensive exam requirements.
