Music Education Major, Bachelor of Music Education (BME)
Admission to the Education and Admission to the Music Programs is required for the BME degree.
Students are prepared for professional careers as music educators in K–12 systems. Students must audition on their primary instrument or voice as part of the admission requirement and are eligible for talent scholarships. Review the Music website for audition requirements.
Note:
- The School of Education has pre-major prerequisites and Secondary Education Core requirements.
- All students in this degree must work with a music education advisor throughout their residency to help them plan their schedule, as many courses are either sequential, offered only in certain years/terms, or have pre-reqs.
- Students in this program are excused from major ensemble participation during the quarter of student teaching.
- This degree option requires more than 12 quarters to complete at 15–16 credits per quarter.
- Students MUST complete any/all recital requirements prior to starting their Education courses and student teaching.
Grade Requirement for all majors offered by the Music Department: the minimum acceptable grade for any music course required for graduation (including transferred music courses) is ≥C.

All Prerequisites Must be Completed Prior to Admission to the Education Department
- Admission Requirements: Attend an admission orientation, complete the online application to the School of Education, including participation in an interview and receive admission.
- Successful completion of any/all music recital requirements.
- A grade ≥B- in all prerequisite courses listed below is required.
- GPA Requirement: a minimum ≥2.8 GPA.
- Pass the Washington Educator Skills Test-Basic (WEST-B). Satisfactory SAT or ACT scores may waive all or part of the WEST–B requirement.
- Successfully receive Pre-residency clearance and FBI fingerprint clearance.
Prerequisites for Secondary Education Program
- Education: EDUC 201 and SPED 363
- English: ENGL 201 or an approved equivalent
- Mathematics: Quantitative and Symbolic Reasoning proficiency
- Speech: CMST 200 or CMST 201 or CMST 340 or an approved equivalent
- Other: PSYC 204
- Pass the NES / West E endorsement test in their major area. Candidates in the Modern Languages should also pass the ACTFL requirements.
- Attempt the NES / West E endorsement test(s) in all non-major endorsement areas.

Students who earn a BME in Music Education from EWU should be able to:
- perform music in public on the primary instrument in a manner consistent with professional expectations through successful completion of juries, recitals, and ensemble concerts;
- demonstrate advanced competency in music theory through score analysis and compositional exercises;;
- demonstrate advanced music aural skills through dictation and sight singing exercises;
- demonstrate advanced historical knowledge of music through writing research reports and exams;
- demonstrate fundamental music keyboard skills through successful completion of a piano proficiency exam;
- demonstrate competency in music conducting through successful completion of practical conducting assignments;
- apply music pedagogical principles to a broad range of instruments/voice through successful completion of teaching demonstrations;
- apply principles of music education methodology in teaching choral music in secondary grade levels through successful completion of score analysis, arrangements and curricular design;
- apply principles of music education methodology in teaching instrumental music in secondary grade levels through successful completion of score analysis, projects, presentations and tests;
- apply principles of music education methodology in teaching general music in elementary grade levels through successful completion of music arrangements, lesson plan design and teaching laboratory assignments.
